Charizard, Mewtwo, and even Blastoise are up there, but are still not more popular than the one literally everyone knows.
That's the problem with this discussion. In this case, most well-known is about the same as most popular, simply because the audience is so broad. Pikachu is the only Pokemon some people know, so of course it's the one they like the most. Even if they aren't really "fans" of Pokemon.
