Discuss Metroid 2, probably the weakest handheld Metroid but still a damn good game that introduced a lot of new shit to the series' canon. Also introduced shit like the Space Jump and Spring Ball.

This is true, originally Super was going to be a remake to the original Metroid, but after Sakamoto played Metroid II he was inspired to make Super Metroid a sequel to Metroid II on the Game Boy.

I'd argue the constraints of the SNES system and budget (including time-wise) molded the game into something great and, better, focused. Other M played (imo) like a game that felt outdated and archaic, especially with it's 2.5D-like movement, when it arrived on the Wii, throwing in game play elements that didn't mesh with each other.

I hate to bring up Other M because it attracts shitposing, despite the fact there's things to compare (what worked and what didn't) when compared to its retro pedigree.

Metroid Other M was doomed to failure because the Wii's control scheme is fucking horrible and it was developed largely by Team Ninja, who made a great game (and a great DC of that game) and then fucked up the series for good.

It sure is. Even running it under emulation, with all the controls configured for gamepad use (which is actually not all that hard), it's godawful.

Metroid 2 is a really solid game, a reasonable followup to the original with the restrictions of the original game boy hardware.

I really liked the Spiderball, how it worked on every surface in the game, it was a fun way to explore the map. It's unfortunate that it never really appeared again in the same way.

I'm sure they had their reasons for not having it in Super Metroid, maybe they thought it was overpowered or something, but the spacejump allowed you to fly everywhere so I don't see how that holds up. Most likely they just didn't have the time to implement it properly.

Either that, or (I think more likely) the space jump pretty much makes it redundant. You can still design a puzzle that the spider ball can solve and the space jump can't, if that's what you want to do, but as far as exploration goes there's nothing the spider ball gives you that the space jump doesn't. (And unlike the space jump, the spider ball is slow, tricky, and not all that much fun to use, really.)

Unrelated, Super Zero Mission is a bastard. Whoever called it a straight port of ZM to the Super Metroid engine is a moron, and ought to be slapped. Chozodia is basically Super Kaizo Metroid and if I don't stop and take a break right now I'm going to snap my motherfucking controller in half. On the other hand, Tourian is amazing, and I'd say it's worth playing SZM just for that.

Except there are lots of upgrades in SM that were redundant, especially if you know how to walljump, shinespark and bombjump. A lot of the time an upgrade will just make certain rooms easier rather than making them possible.

Being able to stick to a wall and crawl up the side of a room and go along the ceiling wouldn't have been out of place in the game at all, in a game that's all about exploration it would have just been another way to explore.

I had a similar experience. I bought this game when it was new, took it home and played it every day for weeks on end... Eventually had killed everything in site, had all power-ups, but could never find the last boss. I eventually buy the Nintendo Power issue with Metroid2 on the cover since it has maps etc... Still could never beat the game like it said. The last boss wasn't there. I think there may be unbeatable versions of the cart out there...

Super Metroid would be better if if wasn't for the painfully slow door transitions. Every time, it just kills immersion. It's worse than the screen transitions in Zelda 1.

I actually consider this the best of all Metroids. I prefer Metroid II's minimalist design over the designs of other games in the whole series, which became increasingly dramatic and flashy in progressive sequels.
