My SNES is occasionally having some sound issues where the audio just gets really distorted and I can also hear a hum when the game is silent. However, it doesn't happen all the time. Just rather frequently. =/

It must be internal because the sound issue occurs with both the RF and the A/V outputs. Anyone ever had these issues before? Am I screwed? I've never opened a SNES up before and don't even have the proper tools to do so. Is this an easy fix or should I just start looking for a new console?

My SNES controllers are starting to give out on me now. I've given them plenty of maintenance in the past and it's time to just replace them. I see some cheap ones on eBay and Amazon, but I know they'll be just that... cheap pieces of shit. The rubber membranes inside (as well as rubber Start/Se;ect buttons instead of cheap plastic ones) make all the difference.

Are any of the 3rd party controllers out there worthwhile? or should I just try getting some used original ones and hope that they'll hold up for a while longer?

tldr: I need recommendations on SNES controllers.

Brawler/Beat 'Em Up Discussion

No.2766920 ViewReplyReportDelete
With brawlers suffering the same fate as a lot of other once popular genres these days, what do you think were some missed opportunities for the genre during the height it reached in the arcade/SNES/MegaDrive days?

What sort of settings do you think were missed opportunities? We've had plenty of street gang games and a decent amount of classical medieval settings with a D&D styled party fighting through monsters. If you wouldn't have wanted a new setting, what good twists could have been applied to those?

Gameplay mechanics? We had simple combos for the most part with the odd special attacks here and there like magic spells or the much loved Streets of Rage police support.

I made a thread a few months back asking for good retro brawler suggestions and got an absolute load of responses and I've played through a good dozen of them now. I'm mainly curious to find out what /vr/ thinks were missed opportunities and not necessarily just a sequel to another popular game.

Personally, I'd have liked to have seen a slightly more comedic style brawler in terms of style and theme. The mechanics could stick largely to the formula, but perhaps add a larger number of combos and upgrades.

I've been interested in Tactics Ogre for a long time, but since it takes place after Ogre Battle, do I need to play that to understand things? I started playing Ogre Battle an hour ago, and it feels a little overwhelming. Guides talking about character progression, secret items, recruitment orders and liberation orders, perfect playthroughs required to get the best ending... odds are I'm not going to replay it, so I'm a little hesitant to get one of the other endings.

I'm not exactly a big fan of how slow Ogre Battle plays, or how many small things I have to keep track of within its clunky interface. Does sinking my teeth into Ogre Battle and getting the best ending really enrich the experience for Tactics Ogre and the other Ogre franchise games?

Official Arranged Soundtracks

What are some official arranged soundtracks for retro games you can think of? The older the better.

Here's Mario Syndrome from 1986.

I'll be posting other favorites later. Share whatever ones you like!

Just be sure to post only official releases, not fan-made stuff, and possibly, stuff released during the /vr/-related years, of course.
