I think you can get home depot to cut the wood and plexi. When getting plexi, get the poly carbon kind, not acrylic. Acrylic breaks so easily when drilling holes for the buttons.

the sound doesn't bother me, so I guess when theres no one around to be annoyed by i take the towel out.
Maybe I should sound proof one of my sticks with artwork underneath.

This is some laughably bad mechanic.
If you mash a hadouken motion you can counter the alpha counter, often times dealing more damage than the guy who is countering you. If you input a super move quick enough you can counter it without taking any damage.
Even if you do execute perfectly you lose a full super bar that is far more useful than countering.
What's even the point of this thing?

Only top level pros are going to be able to input a super's command in the millisecond window that is needed before getting hit by the AC. In practical everyday play that /vr/ is at it's never going to be an issue so counters are still strategic.

I could never get into the Dizzy games; I had like six of them on C64 but they were all stupidly difficult and I just couldn't figure out what the fuck to do, other than running around and exploring the map.

I didn't knew how to speak English at the time though, and the notion of needing pen & paper for a videogame was completely alien to me.

I could probably figure out how to finish them now... but now I don't have the patience.

A lot of the music tracks were damn great though, and I can fully understand why the series has a cult following even today.

8 or arguably 5 (on the DS). If you liked either of those play 4 (NES or DS (which is missing party chat), 3, and maybe 9 (though it's a different beast altogether). If you like the series, play 1 taking into account when it was made and that it was one of the first games of it's type at the time. Then play 2 if you're still into the series. And if you really want to play more DQ, play 7.

If at any point you feel like you want to play though them again, I personally suggest this order
1, 2, & 3 on GBC, 4, 5, & 6 on DS, 8, and then optionally 9 and 7 on their respective hardware.

Probably grab the GBC 1&2 as well as 3. Good place to start. You can certainly play the NES versions if you'd prefer but I feel that there were some nice quality of life upgrades in the GBC versions that I tend to appreciate.

but of all of them, 8 barely eeks out as the best. it is the perfect storm of eastern game design with western level production values.

It was never one I was dying to get but SNES was the last console I got around to building a library for (about 4 years ago). It's just difficult finding the few games left I really do want at a reasonable price. Gotta get what one can while one can still get it, right? So does the rest of /vr think it's a good addition or just another SNES RPG they could take or leave?

Why have the games for this system aged so poorly?

When I grew up this console was my life. I couldn't wait to get home from school to play it. My friends and I had multi hour playstation gaming marathons almost every week.

And now, I can barely stand the thing. The load times, the god awful graphics, the FMV with all that shitty acting. What happened? Did I just get old or has this system really aged like warm milk?

nah your memory is right, no games run without some hickups here and there, it only looks smooth because recorded gameplay doesn`t have dropped frames or lag in playback.

I personally didn't notice a difference either. Panel de Pon/Tetris Attack is my speciality, I don't think I've ever lost a vs. game. Maybe my friends just all sucked.

I found PdP to have slightly better AI, but not a huge jump.

I did have some 30 minutes matches vs the Super Hard final boss, though, which is something I never had on TA. Those were pretty intense and fun as fuck.
