How do I fix the Steam Release of Riven on a Win 7?

I get freezing bugs if I don't run in compatibility mode (2000 and above), I can't save the game if I run in compatibility mode (95 or 98), I already tried -affinity 1, and then my F'ing save-file will get corrupted at random

If you can't save, it's probably a matter of not having admin rights, the game isn't saving in %userdata% so you don't have authorization to save.

Run as admin in compatability mode and see if you can save.

My problem is that when I'm running in compat for 98 or 95, if I click either Save or Open, the windows file menu does not come up at all. Where you normally select your directory and click a file to save / open. It just doesn't appear

looking for forums is how i found doing -affinity 1 and trying compatability modes

i've never done virtual machines before, i was really hoping to get it working on Steam since it came with the Complete Collection

I just tried

Windows 98 compat
-affinity 1 in launch options via steam library
i checkmarked Run as Admin as well as Right-clicking Run as Admin from the Riven folder

the open or save menues never show up

If you have Office Professional, check to see if you have Sharepoint or Groove installed. Even if you didn't install them, double check to make sure, because they will be installed by default any time you try to modify your Office install unless you uncheck them. If they're installed, you'll need to uninstall them because they load themselves into every process and mess with the APIs for opening/saving files, which can crash Riven.

That said, I have Riven on DVD from the 10th Anniversary Collection, and it still crashes often even with compatibility mode and the Sharepoint fix. It seems to be related to the movies because it's really easy to crash when using the telescope and the submarine. I tried all versions of QuickTime and eventually I just gave up and made sure to save often.

As a (lengthy) aside, the reason why Myst doesn't work with newer versions of QuickTime is because Apple broke several of the formats Myst uses in security patches after QuickTime 7. I can't remember the exact versions, but I think QuickTime 7.2 is the last version to work fully with Myst. After that, they broke the RLE animation format (which is used for one of the swirling paintings in the library), and a few versions after that they broke the PICT format (which is why you get a black screen almost everywhere). Also, QuickTime 7 split off a lot of functionality into separate modules, which is why you see people recommend 6.5.2 for Myst. But QuickTime 7 will work fine if you copy over all the right modules (and their localization files) to the Myst folder. I can't remember the filenames off the top of my head, but copying everything should work and you can test every picture and video format Myst uses by looking at the dimensional viewer at the start (each screen uses a different format and it should be animated on all of them), by touching both the swirling paintings in the library, and by viewing the full screen animation from a linking book.

Probably because they're busy working on Obduction. Or they might not have access to the source code for the Windows version of Riven (not sure on this, but I think Broderbund did all the work to actually port the game to Windows).

As for realRiven, I think it wouldn't work for two reasons. First, Riven was a lot more detailed than Myst was. Those renders would be hard to match with real time graphics, even today. Second, Riven was a lot more massive and expensive to produce than Myst was.

Hey OP, Cyanfriend here, it's always cool to see Cyan threads in here:
Our support notes are saying run in win95/98/me compatibility.
When you change compatibility mode, it corrupts the save file.
Try to run as admin, or even better, install the game in a folder that wouldn't require admin privileges.
We know the game's got issues, it was unfortunately the best we could do at the time, etc. We just haven't had any resources available to trying to fix it up. But good god we'd love to, I can assure you.

It's installed in the default Steam folders and i'm not sure how to move it or if I can, or what settings are on those folders

I've tried everythign you said there. The game stops crashing in Windows 95/98/Me but the new problem is that the Save / Open File dialogue doesn't appear after clicking File > Save / Open

So i can't even make a save file
