Played the Star Wars arcade for the first time a couple months back. Your not wrong. Everything looks fantastic and is very impressive when you consider the games age. Especially loved the controller. Very neat. 10/10 would play again.

It's Star Wars, Dummy. If you have a plasma HDTV you can ALMOST get the same experience out of an emulator, especially in 1080p or higher resolution but you still don't get the intensity and perfectly smooth lines of the original XY display.

I have a Vectrex with a multicart and am on the quest for overlays at reasonable prices but I still suspect it won't be as satisfying as a real XY monitor. One of the things I would add to my collection if I had the money is a Zektor ZVG and an old Sega/Gremlin cab to build a color VectorMAME out of. It's just not in my price range though.

I had a special experience with it. I was quite young, 6 or 7 and a new arcade/restaurant had opened up nearby and went there with my father. I saw this and was enthralled, sat down and beat the whole thing on my first try it was incredible.

I tried several times afterwards but never did that well again. It wasn't a place we went to often though, it was crazy loud and my father hated that. By the time I was old enough to make the trek on my own it had shut down.

This actually makes me a little happy I haven't seen a real vector monitor in probably 20 years. I've forgotten the difference so emulated vector games on HD screens look just fine to me.

I remember trying to play the bonus SWA they had on Rogue Squadron 3 on a CRT and it looked like shit.

I only played SWA for the first time a few weeks ago. It seems to be somewhat forgotten compared to other golden age arcade games, maybe because of the license.

The amazing thing is how smooth it runs. Early polygonal games cough and wheeze along at cinematic 15fps while all the old vector games are silky.

LCD is unacceptable for emulating vector. You NEED plasma or high resolution CRT and you need to crank the contrast and the brightness.

I think the style looks pretty cool no matter what, but true vector displays really are a sight to behold and it's sad that there really is no comparable solution for the emulating poorfag hobbiest.

Eat shit friend. I honestly don't know how anyone can stand them. It may be partially because I have better than average eyesight, but unless I'm way across a room they look like a hideous mass of coloured dots. Even at a distance I can only stand to look at them for short periods of time.

Before modern screens, computers were near unusable, TV was almost painful and I didn't get into gaming at all until the GameBoy.

Vector display operate differently from traditional monitors, in that they don't scan line-by-line. Instead, they actually draw every shape along their geometric lines. It's something that looks fantastic in motion, because the the images look and flicker differently than a traditional CRT as they refresh.

First, all overlays have opaque white portions. Second, nobody is offering the service anymore as it's a pain in the ass to do it which is why I haven't done it myself.

Akalabeth has some weird perspective issues although there is more detail than Wizardry, haven't played Ultima I yet :(

*NOT RETRO* but Dark Spire does wireframe dungeons with polygons, looks nice imo.
