I absolutely love the background of the level in Rendering Ranger where you descent into a city and the background changes almost seamlessly from a cloudy sky with a skull in the background, over a bird's-eye view of the city, into urban canyons.

This is a good thread I believe.
But this is a no brain-er for me. when configuring my PVM I use this background because its so burnt into my memory that if it was even slightly off I would notice.

this image I just pulled up I can say right off the bat the brightness is way too high ( the crystals do twinkle every 10 seconds so it could have just been a poorly timed shot) His chroma is all the way up for some reason .

It's too bad there's only one ice cave level in that game, all the other types were used multiple times. There were four water levels, they should have gotten rid of one and added a second ice cave level.

yeah it really kinda bugged me. its crazy how vivid the memory of the first time playing that level is...me and my cousin (she was like 9) were playing it for the first time and we went into the cave (I was looking at the game manual)
I hear her say " oOoOoH LOOK HOW PRETTY" and I look up and see this crazy shit.

first time a game rendered me speechless.

I feel non strictly tile-based backgrounds in 16-bit style rpgs have a little less merit, but I loved seeing that kind of stuff back then, like the floating mountain top in Chrono Trigger, or the forest pool in Final Fantasy VI

Stage 3 from Contra 3, in the 90's I always thought those were tornadoes in a really densely packed technological city, but now I realize it's just plumes of smoke coming from a densely packed factory land.

Like half the graphics in that game had that weird "default texture pack" look to them. I mean, I know they probably made all of them ('cept for cheesy photoshoppy stuff like that one), but there's a bland, tentative look to anything that's not a tree billboard or decorative glyphs

DKC2 also had so many cool atmospheric bgs to the point of being hard to choose one. I went with Krokodile Kore since the secret cave looked gorgeous in motion with the erupting plasmatic energy animation on the background.

i have a huge folder of screenshots i took in the first 3 Sonic games with a bunch of modifications so i could take shots like these ingame rather than with ripping sprites

I also loved that one Eyedol stage. I hate how most of the times I fight him at the bridge one.

I also love Riptor's. The blood splattered floor with reflection of the characters was impressive to see at the time, and still looks damn good.

Unless I'm mistaken, someone got in touch with the original Rare devs and asked if the models/assets are still around. They stored everything on DAT-tapes and the stuff is probably gone forever now.

Simple, but so evocative, those alien landscapes in F-Zero really get my imagination wild and made me want to explore what was in the background so much.

What games has similar landscapes to F-Zero? I'm talking more about "strange" stuff like Silence, Sand Ocean, Port Town or Death Wind than futuristic cities like Mute City, I know there are plenty of retro games that use city backgrounds.

Those are both from Kabuki Klash, a pretty fun Samurai Showdown clone with characters from an RPG series. Give it a try, it's actually fun for a while. The characters are great.

Because games like Tales of Phantasia were made by sizable teams of professionals with huge amounts of skill and experience. They had professional artists creating visuals which looked as good as they could, and professional programmers to code in their work as best as possible. It's simply not reasonable to compare their work to the attempts made by a small group of amateurs who are typically only really good at coding and lack art backgrounds.

I like these a lot, a artistry is very good in and of itself, but what makes it stand out is the very advanced palette animation. Unfortunately the backgrounds were for a kind of calendar application, not for a game.

I kinda like it. Mario 3 is all a stageplay, maybe all 2D Mario games are. So there's a spotlight illuminating it all.

I've never understood this stage. I always thought it was a rooftop but I think I read it was called USA highway or something, and then I noticed the white stripes on the foreground, so yeah I guess it's part of a street, or a bridge rather, that for some reason has a huge chunk dropped out of it and for some reason a jet is hovering? I honestly don't know what happened here.
