Back then 3-4 player multiplayer on one keyboard was totaly awesome.

Played mostly Vwing and Wings.

Was it the best realtime multiplayer genre/subgenre?

This game was the most fun I ever had with 4-players on same computer. Only two on keyboard though (the others used mouse and gamepad).
It came out in 1993, before Doom. There was nothing quite like it at the time. The closest thing was maybe Bloodwych.

As much as I loved it, the problem was that most of the time there's "key jamming" that will make a player unable to register a keystroke. This usually kills the game, especially if it's fast-paced and involves a lot of keyboard button combinations (2 player fighting games come to mind).

some games are designed to allow that, though, like co-op and identical view. even personally I think looking at what others are doing adds to the excitement, especially for games like OP's so there's no camping / hiding and you can always know where to go for the action.

That game Wings looks pretty fun, might have to give that a go. Of course I'll need to get an NKR keyboard before I go traipsing into the multi.

middle school library was for me the fight for the one pc that could play civilization 2, we told the librarian it was like Carmen San Diego and was historically educational.
