Discuss Metroid 2, probably the weakest handheld Metroid but still a damn good game that introduced a lot of new shit to the series' canon. Also introduced shit like the Space Jump and Spring Ball.

Think about how many "classic" style metroids tehre even are.

Its Metroid on NES, Metroid 2: Return of Samus on Gameboy, Super Metroid on SNES, Metroid Fusion GBA , and Metroid Zero Mission GBA.

3 of those are on handhelds, and Fusion and Zero mission are obviously grossly superior because they had

You can hate on fusion for being linear all you want but its honestly one of the better metroid games, I would rank them

If Fusion cut down the Adam conversations by like, half, and gave you 2-3 missions to do at once instead of forcing one at a time it could have been a strong contended for the best game in the series. It easily has the best action and bosses of the 2D Metroid games.

It's a shame that its problems are much more intrusive than Zero Mission's and Super's.

Pretty great, the controls are solid and its definitely one of the better games on the Gameboy. Its real easy to get lost though because the backgrounds can get pretty same-y and the lack of color really doesn't help. As much as i love the games i often get lost and will inpatiently quit it and just start over.

I really like Metroid II. A lot of people tend to overlook it, and its probably the most unloved Metroid game besides Metroid Prime Pinball. Being followed up by Super Metroid overshadowed it greatly, and I've noticed a lot of people seem to see it's existence as an inconvenient outlier in the franchises formula. In doing so I think it mainly serves to also paint Fusion as an improper Metroid game. but, consider how Nintendo designs games to work around consoles they're on, and its easy o see why II(and Fusion) are structured the way they are. Both use an objective-based game designed where you're cut off from areas until you reach a certain goal. This works for what they are; portable games, because if you progress naturally, you're never too far gone from what you're meant to do. this may kill the exploration aspect a bit, but it's useful when battery life was a major consideration in portable games. When we started getting rechargeable batteries with the SP, around the time Zero Mission came out, we got a game that was much more open(though still fairly linear).

I also think II and Fusion's goal was trying to establish a new playstyle and control for future Metroid games. The focus isn't just on exploring, but how you can move around and explore. II adds a ton of features, and Fusion tweked he established playstyle adding things like the grapple and manual missile shifting, as well as refining the walljump.

So I just finished Metroid 1 last night; it was a great game and I know I'll be replaying it in the future, but had some seriously fucking irritating flaws:
>having to bomb arbitrary blocks to progress

I get that there were specific reasons for some of these (and they apply to other NES games) but it doesn't make a modern playthrough any less frustrating. I feel this would be infinitely more enjoyable on a future playthrough where I have a vague idea of where shit is and what I have to do.

i think most of these issues could be fixed easily in a romhack: colour-marking bombable/hollow walls, respawning with full hp, slightly better enemy/platform placement, and general bugfixing.

Don't get me wrong, I like Super ZM, but it's a hell of a lot more than just "a few changes". It's a totally different map and a serious difficulty upgrade, even compared to ZM's hard mode.

Metroid is a lot more tolerable with a map and knowing how to deal with Brinstar without having to do a shit ton of backtracking. Basically you can get the first missile, go get the Bombs, get the Ice Beam, and then climb the far right shaft with the Ice Beam and get the other missile and use a bomb/space jump (kinda hard on that one) to get the Varia Suit, and from there you can take out Kraid and Ridley in either order. The only other thing to keep in mind is that if you're going to continue, you should have an E-tank in mind that you can grab so you don't have to farm, with the exception of preparing to fight Kraid or Ridley (which both have easily farmable spots before their room) or continuing in the final area, in which you can farm Metroids that drop shit tons of energy and health.

Tanabe said that he has no plans to ever work on a 2D Metroid with Retro or any of the other western studios that might work on the series because "That's Sakamoto's thing and I want to respect that."

Meanwhile Sakamoto has no interest in the series, putting all his efforts into franchises like Tamodachi Life and Rhythm Heaven, and even if he does return he'll probably look into a followup to Other M instead of Fusion.

At least the fan-game scene is still doing well and there's a lot of indies putting out Metroid-inspired games. AM2R is fucking awesome.

Key word CURRENTLY.
All that meant was that after his promotions he is now a producer & will no longer direct or write Metroid games, someone else on his team will do that, he will just produce.

Not him but I think Metroid II coming out before Super worked in Super's favor. Or at least I want to believe since the gameplay seem to evolve as the series went on from the first to Super, despite the linearity and the game's issues.

My biggest gripe with the game was the fact that Samus' body took up a lot of the screen. It was surprisingly detailed though. I know the screen was small and there were big technical limitations, but couldn't there be some way to make it "zoomed out" more? Would that have taken too much memory?

This is true, originally Super was going to be a remake to the original Metroid, but after Sakamoto played Metroid II he was inspired to make Super Metroid a sequel to Metroid II on the Game Boy.

I'd argue the constraints of the SNES system and budget (including time-wise) molded the game into something great and, better, focused. Other M played (imo) like a game that felt outdated and archaic, especially with it's 2.5D-like movement, when it arrived on the Wii, throwing in game play elements that didn't mesh with each other.

I hate to bring up Other M because it attracts shitposing, despite the fact there's things to compare (what worked and what didn't) when compared to its retro pedigree.

Metroid 2 is a really solid game, a reasonable followup to the original with the restrictions of the original game boy hardware.

I really liked the Spiderball, how it worked on every surface in the game, it was a fun way to explore the map. It's unfortunate that it never really appeared again in the same way.

I'm sure they had their reasons for not having it in Super Metroid, maybe they thought it was overpowered or something, but the spacejump allowed you to fly everywhere so I don't see how that holds up. Most likely they just didn't have the time to implement it properly.

Either that, or (I think more likely) the space jump pretty much makes it redundant. You can still design a puzzle that the spider ball can solve and the space jump can't, if that's what you want to do, but as far as exploration goes there's nothing the spider ball gives you that the space jump doesn't. (And unlike the space jump, the spider ball is slow, tricky, and not all that much fun to use, really.)

Unrelated, Super Zero Mission is a bastard. Whoever called it a straight port of ZM to the Super Metroid engine is a moron, and ought to be slapped. Chozodia is basically Super Kaizo Metroid and if I don't stop and take a break right now I'm going to snap my motherfucking controller in half. On the other hand, Tourian is amazing, and I'd say it's worth playing SZM just for that.

Except there are lots of upgrades in SM that were redundant, especially if you know how to walljump, shinespark and bombjump. A lot of the time an upgrade will just make certain rooms easier rather than making them possible.

Being able to stick to a wall and crawl up the side of a room and go along the ceiling wouldn't have been out of place in the game at all, in a game that's all about exploration it would have just been another way to explore.

I had a similar experience. I bought this game when it was new, took it home and played it every day for weeks on end... Eventually had killed everything in site, had all power-ups, but could never find the last boss. I eventually buy the Nintendo Power issue with Metroid2 on the cover since it has maps etc... Still could never beat the game like it said. The last boss wasn't there. I think there may be unbeatable versions of the cart out there...

the difference in mechanics between metroid 1 and metroid 2 is enormous, metroid 1 wouldn't have been such a clusterfuck if it had many of the metroid 2 improvements

Metroid 2 is the best /vr/ Metroid. Good pacing, and map design that lets you feel like you're exploring without getting lost.
Super Metroid would be better if if wasn't for the painfully slow door transitions. Every time, it just kills immersion. It's worse than the screen transitions in Zelda 1.

I actually consider this the best of all Metroids. I prefer Metroid II's minimalist design over the designs of other games in the whole series, which became increasingly dramatic and flashy in progressive sequels.
