A few months ago I was hosting a thread where I was programming an SNES game. School happened and I had to drop it for the time being. If I had the time to make games right now, I would, but homework/research takes all my time at the moment.
Some other ideas that might be cool. You would need a way to either immobilize or grapple with enemy ships if you wanted to board using your main ship. Hull anchors and tractor beams could attach your ship to theirs, or you could disable their engines somehow.
Gaining entry could be done by umblicus as I've mentioned, or maybe ,laser cutting the hull, or hacking an airlock.
Space marines could be in small mechs that could more easily repel and advance on enemy forces. The mechs themselves could be customized (parts, payload, programs, etc).
Dogfighters could be customized in much the same way.
It would be cool if you could do things like cut ships in half and steal parts away, leaving the owners derelict, meaning the ships would be put together like legos. In this way friends could come together and build a more badass temporary ship. Also enemy ships would appear opaque until you mapped them somehow, be it with scanners or crew.
Pushing fucks into planetary atmospheres and stars would be fun too.
There could be a lot to be had here. You'd almost have to be careful to choose the best elements a game doesn't lose focus. Then again it would be fun to run with an actual crew of friends and everyone has an important job towards reaching goals.
