You can attack, cast, use an item or run.
Anything else is just a combo or an arguable offshoot of those. While I like mixing it up a little, when it gets to your 7th random battle between towns, choosing a fire spell just to mix it up is a pain in the cunt when you could just spam attack to get back to the part of the game that wasn't forced on you.
