So I was thinking,
Do you think Nintendo's best team of developers could make a Sonic the Hedgehog game as good as Super Mario World or Super Mario 64 if given the chance back then? On the flip side, what would Sega do if they had to make a Mario game?

To be honest...I think Nintendo can do a decent, plot lite Sonic game that can be REALLY good if they implemented the things that Sonic is known for. As for Sega, I think it would be less a Mario game, and more something akin to their more traditional platformers like Ristar, or the first Sonic 1. It won't feel like a full Mario game, but it may still be alright.

Yes, but they wouldn't focus heavily on the 3fast5me aspect.

Take the standard gameplay Nintendo makes but add something to differentiate itself.

Why is this always what these Sonic yiffags focus on? The 16 bit games were more about interesting multi-tiered levels than speed. That's why it was so cool to be able to go back and play sonic 2 as knuckles, to explore the parts of certain stages you couldn't get to before. Every time a new speed focused sonic game comes out, it ends up being a linear push-forward-to-win affair.

Are you retarded or just pretending to be? I flat out said they were about interesting multi-tiered levels, not exploration and backtracking. Yes I said you could explore more as knuckles, but you're still heading in one general direction. Part of the charm of the old games was that the levels had different paths to take and S&K expanded that a bit more.

Mario was always better suited to the 3d conversion, sonic was always about technical platforming and doing weird stuff with the platforming, mario was always more about the variety and adventure. Tight technical platformjbg doesn't convert to 3d, adventure does.

Retro studios are the only modern company I trust with 2d platformers.

The Sega guys from the west who did Alien Isolation could do a new Metroid, let Retro make a new Wario Land instead.

I'm a different guy to whom you're replying to. I do agree with you that Sonic has always been about speed, but I think it did it in a slightly different way in the older titles. Newer sonic games have an emphasis on just always letting the player go fast, whereas I always felt that, while the Mega Drive games certainly emphasised going fast, speed was your reward for being good at the game.

This is why it always bugs me when people say "The game punishes you for going fast!", because they've got it the wrong way round. The game doesn't punish you for going fast, it rewards the player's skill by allowing them to go fast without running into shit, which was super cool at the time (and still is, imo). A new player will try going fast and run into enemies and spikes, so they have to take it easy and go at a slower pace, whereas a skilled person who's done a few runs of the game can get their time on GHZ to under 30 seconds.

I enjoy replaying Sonic 1 way more than SMW for some (probably autistic) reason.

In fact I think the 16bit games are more akin to SM64 than anything else.
