The start of the persona/waifucancer that has ovetaken Fatlus, and thus the reason why there's only 4 actual SMTs and a gazillion Personas and waifushit.

It's a cool game (with a retarded premise, but not like that stopped anyone from enjoying MT1) on its own, but I dislike what it came t o represent and what it brought to the table in the long run.

I love it. It's really sparse, more like a classic bare-premise dungeon crawler than the other SMT games, but there's something really charming about it. Plus I really love that school uniform design.

You lose both your party members early on. Your actual companion follows you no matter what ideology you choose. It's the same with SMT2. It's about ideologies, not waifus. If... does define the plot based on who's the classmate you like the most.

Of the classic SMTs I think it offers the most variation, but that being said, it's also the most dungeon crawl heavy of the three.

I liked it quite a bit when I played through it years ago, but I thought the Guardian system was kinda weird. Never played through all 4 routes, but always wanted to try an Akira/Amon run.

I'm a mainlinefag and I find the concept in if... pretty cool. I have no doubt it's got it's own interesting atmosphere far removed from the waifu bullshit people say practically sprang from it.

That being said I never played it...Has anyone here actually played it? Is there a translation or is there not? Every time there's an untranslated game I try to see how far my kindergarten level Japanese gets me and I am never not disappointed

There's very little story in if... so if you can read the menu commands you'll probably do mostly okay. Might want to check an FAQ just for the start of the game, regarding picking your partner and whatnot, but even then I think you can stumble around and trigger the right events to move forward. It's pretty straightforward after that.
