OK, so this thing is no Everdrive & it's the cheaper option out there, but I just picked up a Super UFO Pro 8 for cheap and am enjoying it so far. Keep in mind that despite being almost 40, I'm just a casual gamer wanting to play some classics on the system without having to dish out 50 bucks per cart in some cases.

So does /vr/ have any love for this thing? Can someone point me in a direction where I can learn the basics regarding save games and any other common user errors I may encounter along the way. Any advice is appreciated. So far it seems like most people hate the fact that it only supports up to 8 characters in the file names, but coming from a DOS background that's not a deal breaker for me. At least not yet...

The UFO only keeps the save of the last game you played. So if you switch games, your save will be lost. The way to prevent this is to backup your save to the SD after each session, then transfer that save back when you are ready to play again.

Don't update the UFO, apparently the one update that was released is buggy as fuck and can brick the UFO.

The save-state feature thingie works on some games, not on others, appears to be a sound issue.

That's about all I can think of.

I wasn't really looking for anything. I got this from a friend that decided to upgrade to the best model Everdrive and sold this to me for cheap.

I know this is the simpler model out there, but I'm not mad at being able to load most SNES roms on my system for the price of a single good game.

I would have saved my money. I have one of these and they are incredibly limited. Enhancement chip games will not run, and games over a certain size will not load so no Dragon Quest III.

I wish I would have known about the chinese Everdrives when I got this one.

The Chinese everdrives are the same as the first everdrives released. The same.
A lot of lies are spread about them by the twats who think he's Ukranian Jesus. As I keep saying, it sucks for him that his design is being sold en masse without him getting a cut. That's too bad. He got into business with the Chinese so he could have a factory producing them, then he got buttmad when the Chinese he went into business with turned out to be Chinese and therefore sold the plans on.

The only truth the ED community forum idiots spout about the Chinese one is that if you update the firmware it'll brick. The feature of bricking China clone carts is in the newer firmware by design.

tl;dr Chinese carts are fine. The plastic cart itself isn't as robust as a genuine SNES game, but it isn't going to break with regular use.
It did kill my dog though.

For anyone who isn't already familiar, this is the angry Chinese shitposter who has a vendetta against the Everdrive maker over christ knows what. He shows up every time Everdrives are mentioned regardless of the context and proceeds to rip on anyone who owns one and/or says it works without fault. If you look through this thread you'll notice there aren't really any overly opinionated posts one way or the other until now. He doesn't use a trip, but you can always tell which one he is.

Since the only other flash cart I've ever owned was for the Gameboy, the "limitations" seen in the Super UFO Pro are really no big deal... I'm used to having to swap out games to play in small quantities either way... So things like only 1 savegame at a time and names limited to 8 characters are fine with me...

Now if only this thing could be used to flash and re-write original carts... But that would be asking for too much I suppose.

You're like me from six months ago. Word of advice, it can't play special chip games using the passthrough so don't even try. Mine got some kind of corruption from me fiddling with the stack to get it to all make good contact and now it won't read SD cards. This seems common for it.

Also, the process to back up your save games for when you load a different ROM is whack. Learn to do it now rather than later because if you don't, you can and will lose your save files.

Bottom line is that unless you REALLY want to also be able to dump carts, or you get a crazy deal on the UFO and for these two reasons you're willing to deal with the threat of bricking and/or the inconvenience of keeping save games go with Everdrive.

The UFO doesn't deserve all the hate though and if the UFO people were smart they'd strip some features and undercut on price.

How are emulator people in the middle? They're way off on the side of eschewing all the original hardware to play just the game itself. Bought an official Everdrive MD 1st batch and like it, loads slow but no big deal.

Bought an official Super Everdrive+DSP-1 first batch, its OK. I'm semi-upset that he stopped Krikzz stopped supporting it before giving it cheat capability. But whatever, I guess.

Bought official Everdrive 64 1st batch, again no cheats but its not bad.

Plan on buying NES and GB everdrive from aliexpress sometime. Glad to hear that they are not of poor quality there.

No lag, the only issue I run into is some weird "MissingNo" looking images of the boxers profile pictures before the match and in between rounds.

These errors do not show up during match game play, so playing the game has never been an issue.

Emulation is not entirely accurate, especially 4th gen and up. Flash carts are not emulation as the processing is still all done on the real original hardware, unless the cartridge has to emulate special chips. Interestingly NES carts all have a "special chip" inside (the mapper) which N8 everdrives do emulate the function of so it's also not technically 100% legit especially when playing FDS games.

Original ED was and always will be best ED.

I guess I'm one of those "In the middle" people. I play (mostly) flashcarts on a Retron 3/Super Retro Trio, on a CRT, with original controllers.

Retron 3/Super Retro Trio does not have the "Retron 5" android front end attached. So when you put an original cart in the system and hit the power button it starts up just like original hardware.

Its nice to play the system on a TV like the original hardware and use the original controllers. As long as im not staring RIGHT AT the console there is no difference between the R3/SRT3 and original systems.

I use the clone systems on my upstairs desk office setup and leave my original systems in the basement game room.

That's all fair. I get if playing on a CRT tv is a big bonus for you. I think 16 bit games emulated on HD screens look worlds better than they ever did on old TVs, but not everyone thinks that way.

Here's the thing... Living in South America, most of the carts you find here are Chinese bootlegs anyway (in those universal super famicom style carts that fit in all systems) with really poorly printed labels and sellers ask for 20 to 35 for these fake games because they are "classic products". They don't even know the actual difference between official and bootleg carts in some cases. Having said that, when you live in a place where most games are just bootlegs, pricey on top, and ordering online isn't cheap because of shipping and import costs... then believe me, spending a few bucks on a cart that allows you to play just about anything on your console is pretty damn useful. I'm not gonna pay 30 bucks for a bootleg Turtles in Time when I can pay 40 and have just about every game ever on a different unofficial cart.

If you're fine with emulators, that's cool too... No hate on that... but there's also nothing wrong with getting as close to the "real" experience as possible. An official label on a cart doesn't make the game more "real" for me. Playing a game on the actual console vs a computer does however.

I guess the easiest way to explain it to you is that inside of every single SNES cart made is just a ROM file that gets loaded by the console. An everdrive lets you have as many ROMs on one cart as you want.

I have a 7. Pretty much the same thing except it loads from floppies instead of SD. I added a floppy emulator so I do actually load off SD. The way I deal with the file name/disk limitation is by printing out a sheet that has the game name and the number of the floppy slot it's image is in. I punch that in to the emulator and load. You could do the same thing by just using a number for the ROM file name.
inb4 kids sperg that I do "all" this extra work to save a few bucks and use a system that has better features and is a piece of vidya piracy history.

Your knowledge and understanding are the thing most limited here. No flash cart can "play 100%". The ED can play a few games the UFO can't. The UFO can have as many saves as can fit on your SD.

Nah, I can't judge. I come from the DOS days and the 8 character limit doesn't scare me either. Matter of fact, I was actually looking for a program that can rename files to 8 letters in batches (that I did find, and it's called CK Rename), but I was hoping to find one that can also automatically create an indexed TXT file for me of what each abbreviated file was named previously. I'm sure there's a program out there that can do it... I just have yet to find it.

I wrote something like this for the image builder for my v64 custom firmware. That was for 23 char file names though. Getting it down to 8 is tricky. You'd probably want to make a mapping of words to abbreviate, like everything starting with "Super" becomes "S."
Another thing you can do if the device displays the files in the order they are stored in the FAT is link multiple entries to the same file. so

E.V.O. Search for Eden (U) [b1].smc
becomes:

E.V.O. S .SMC
EARCH FO .SMC
R EDEN ( .SMC
U) [B1] .SMC

And each of those file names links to the same file.

In the end I found a printed TOC easiest.

I hear they use cheap batteries which in some cases even arrive dead when you first get it. I found a pic of the batteries inside and it seems that there is a rechargeable battery for the DRAM and a typical CR2032 for SRAM. Either way you can load everything from SD card without the batteries. The batteries are only to retain the memory once the SNES has been switched off and the cart removed. The CR2032 is a breeze to replace, but I'm wondering now... If the other battery is a rechargeable nimh, then perhaps the cart needs to be left in the console for a long time turned on to get a charge in the first place? Hmmmm

Unless it comes with a DSP chip attached or you use the UFO8's passthrough thing, you'll also miss Mario Kart, Pilotwings and a a few others. AFAIK, the Everdrive needs a DSP soldered to play those ones.

SD2SNES is the only one that can play all the games that need a DSP or MMX chip out of the box.

The "MMX" C4 chip emulation is inaccurate; it literally runs overclocked.

And unless you really want support for Byuu's MSU1 "chip", or have high hopes that "one day" it'll at the very least emulate SuperFX and SA1 chips, you're better off just buying a Super Everdrive China Version and soldering in the DSP1 chip out of a $5 copy of Ballz. In 4-5 years time neither chip has been added, so the likelihood of that "one day" ever happening is very slim. Anyone that says different is full or shit, or a paid shill.
