The first movie does clearly end on the note that there's more to the story. It's fine to do that of course, but that ending is obviously the beginning of something large and there's plenty of room for more storytelling.

The second two movies are 100% terrible, but they're no where near as good as the first one is and ultimately just muddle what the original accomplished. I genuinely think anyone is better off not watching them. Just watch Equilibrium or some other action movie instead.

Animatrix is decent and worth a watch though, that's true.

It's one of the things that's made those stories about the script being stolen seem so plausible. The first Matrix is still genuinely pretty great, but the two follow up films are real train wrecks in comparison. It almost feels like they were written by totally different people.

a word of advice though, expect to be severely disappointed with the next 2 movies. the matrix really was the pinnacle in that trilogy by FAR. avoid watching the other 2 if possible.....for your sake. you've been warned.

The recommendation someone else made to just watch Equilibrium, Ghost in the Shell, even Jhon Wick or some other action movie instead is a good one. Matrix sequels bring only disappointment with them.

Animatrix is legit good though.

I remember, in 1999, everyone went ape for Matrix, I remember I took drawing lessons and the teacher was like "you guys NEED to watch The Matrix, it's like NOTHING you've ever seen, I won't even tell you what's it about, you gotta see for yourselves, it's unique, it opened my mind", etc.

Then I watched it, and it was an entertaining film, but I was disappointed, I expected more.

I'm not saying they are related, but movies like GITS and EoE blew my little 12 yo brains away, so when I watched Matrix, I didn't think it was anything special.
The whole "reality is actually subjective" theme is present in both GITS and EoE, too.

Not really. It's cool as hell when you're 14 but I tried watching it years later and the fight choreography is laughably bad. It had cool ideas but really should have been handled by someone else.

the matrix is one of those movies everyone has to watch at least once in their life. it's like intro to philosophy 101 and has alot going for it. thing is, matrix was done on a tight budget and it's a classic, they had lots more money for the sequels and they churned out garbage. matrix 2 is kind of ok, avoid 3 at all costs.

the matrix action scenes blatantly plagiarize old school hong kong kung fu movies, but that's nitpicking.

I still remember when The Matrix was the apex of cool between 1999 and 2003 with hype for the two sequels no smaller than for Return of the King.

Every goddamn movie and game needed to rip off The Matrix in some way (and yes, I know The Matrix ripped a ton of shit itself).

That was until the two sequels (particularly 3) did come out and sunk good will in the series like a ton of lead being dropped into water.

There was a lot of hype behind the game Enter the Matrix too, particularly how it had tons of exclusive footage that tied into the films. Oh and that it was going to have gameplay to make you really feel like you're a digital kung fu hero.
