I know that the PS2 plays PS1 games, but is the Namco NegCon controller compatible with the PS2 playing a PS1 game that was originally compatible?

OP, all PS1 controllers can be used with a PS2, it's just a matter of the buttons not registering properly for PS2 games, since many of them require the pressure sensitive buttons of the PS2 controller.

Feel free to play PS1 games with any PS1 controller though.

You would have known this if you had only bothered to google.

But It's kinda is specialized, actually the sperg is the one who needs to google. Have you read Wikipedia article on it? Only few PS2 games are fully supported, e.g. will detect analog I and II buttons. For everything else you will end up with a controller which square and cross buttons are twice harder to press.

Maybe so, but OP was only interested in knowing if PS1 games would be properly supported. Understandable, you wouldn't immediately expect everything to work from one console to the next just because they claim compatibility.

The Playstation and Playstation 2 are rare cases though, OP, in that they are extremely compatible, to the point that even PS2 controllers work on a PS1 IIRC.
