What kind of audio setup do you have for your retro games? Amps and speakers?

I've got a Sansui 5000a connexted to a pair of Polk Monitor 70s. It's a great setup for retro sound/music, but the Polks are very sensitive so I can hear the buzz from old audio chips and questionable capacitors.

I always figured that the TV speaker was fine for retro games, assuming the set is any good.

Dolby Digital for everything always. I can't stand the way stock speakers sound on TVs.

At the minimum you should have some decent stereo speakers, it's often suggested in retro hardware manuals as one of the set ups and does make a nice little difference from 4th gen on.

You could say that about 3rd and 4th gen games, but for 5th onward that's not really true. It's fun even with old games though. I'm playing Castlevania right now (if you can call my shoddy attempts at dodging medusa heads "playing"), and a lot of the sounds are at a frequency that produces vibrations that I can feel. It's a very different experience from TV speakers and a lot more fun.

I got some decent speakers plugged into the Mega Drive headphone jack to get stereo sound, but I use the tv speakers for everything else.

I use a pair of Micca COVO-S speakers because they're small and actually shielded so they're safe for CRTs. Paired them with a t-amp I had laying around. They sound fine but I wouldn't mind a bit more bass for Genesis games. Maybe I'll get a cheap sub one day.
