You move at a snails pace, which combined with a rediculously high encounter rate, is just really hard to bare,
Far too many enemies can poison you far too often. And you can't restore HP in any manner until you are cured.
Most dungeons feel empty, especially the castles. You spend most of your time wandering around barren corridors and longl windy paths which may I once again bring up snails pace walking and high encounter rate.
Battles have actually taken a downgrade of sorts. Your character spries are absent, like in Phantasy Star I, and enemies have like two frames of movement.
Techniques are really useless, with the exception of Gires, but in order to make it useful, you have to go to a shop in town, which allows you to detract from the effectiveness of your other spells, which make them even more useless.
And the battle music is weird. There are 4 tracks in total, they are like unfinished loops, and you can hear them all in the same battle. One of them is for selecting attacks, one is for standard battle, one is when you are on top of the enemy, and the other is when they got the fix on you. But play the game, and tell me which one is which. You will lose your mind.
There are other things, but these are the biggest offenders
