My SNES is occasionally having some sound issues where the audio just gets really distorted and I can also hear a hum when the game is silent. However, it doesn't happen all the time. Just rather frequently. =/

It must be internal because the sound issue occurs with both the RF and the A/V outputs. Anyone ever had these issues before? Am I screwed? I've never opened a SNES up before and don't even have the proper tools to do so. Is this an easy fix or should I just start looking for a new console?

Maybe it's dusty on the inside. You can get a few Nintendo security bits from Amazon (if you already have a screwdriver with replaceable bits) and a can of computer duster from any hardware or electronics store to open it up and clean it.

they aren't "nintendo security" screws, I forget what they are called but they are actually just a standard screw that a lot of companies have used, Apple computer at the time used them as well for instance. Also you don't need to have a screwdriver with replaceable bits, you can get a special screw driver for them for the same price as a normal flat head or phillips screw driver.

OP here. So here's a recent discovery. It only hums when I insert carts that have the extra tabs on the sides of the chip you can see on the bottom of the cart. So for example Starfox has sound issues whereas DKC doesn't. And that seems to be the case with every cart. Weird. What could be causing this to happen only with those carts?

thank you, captain obvious. as if i wouldn't google something first before having to summit myself to exactly this kind of shitposting.

I've narrowed it down to sound issues only with games that have enhancement chips. From the second the SNES is turned on it starts humming and the sound comes out distorted, whereas a regular cart has no hum at all.

Ok I've been enough of a jerk with my comments. Now I'll see if I can't give you some helpful suggestions.

I'd check and clean those pins or whatever they're called on the console first.

I've never had to open one a snes specifically but if this doesn't do it open it up and see if any of the capacitors are bulging on top. This is a sign they're blown. I wouldn't think the board would use extra ones for those specific pins only so I doubt this is the case. Cleaning the board with a qtip and some high content rubbing alcohol (97% or up). That might do it.

I'm 99% sure your problem has to do with those specific contacts since you're only having the problem with Super FX carts. Compare the bottom of a SuperFX cart to that of another and match up the extra contacts to where it plugs into the console to see where they are.

First thing I would try is rubbing alcohol and a qtip on those contacts in the cart slot. Look to see if any of the contacts are worn or look like they might have contact issues. You won't need to open it up if you start with that.

The contacts have all been cleaned recently with DeOxit contact cleaner. I just took a look inside again and all those pins seem fine.

I don't have the tools to open this thing up, so that's still out of the question for now. I am still curious to hear other people's knowledge regarding the matter though.

It's most likely the on board sound has nothing to do with the games. Over time the snes's hardware wares out. Happened to me. it was the sound. I just had to deal with it. :/

Yes, I'm using the OG power adapter.

This seems to mainly happen with the Starfox cart. Really odd. As soon as I pop that cart in and turn the SNES on the buzzing begins. However if I pop in the Super UFO Pro (which also has the extra tabs on the bottom of the cart) I don't get the buzzing.

I know the Starfox cart and other games with enhancement chips have the "grounding tab" as well (my cart does have one). Could that have something to do with it? I also noticed that my Starfox cart has the contacts a little more out than other games, but it still looks alright... Has anyone else ever had a particular cartridge that makes the sound go crazy?

OP here... I gave in and bought another SNES (just the console, nothing else) for 20 bucks... Sound is fine now. Only downside is that this one I just got has the older serial numbers and the EJECT button painted on rather than indented. So hopefully this one won't give me any video issues in the future...
