Damn good if you're into JRPGs and still worth a look even if you're not. Its my favorite of the series, though I have a decent tolerance for grinding and turn based combat. Story is pretty neat as well.

If you liked Mario RPG you'll like this. I honestly can't think of a better introduction to the series, try to relax enjoy the somewhat slower pace compared to most other games. If you get a little burned out take a short break, but don't try to rush it.

trying to think of some games that weren't first party launch titles or JRPG... seriously, all I can remember playing was FF3 for ever and ever. I must have beat that game half a dozen times.

And, I think the launch titles were what really blew me away. coming off the NES, the insane action of Contra 3, and the incredible complexity of Zelda LTTP hit pretty hard. I am tempted to put Actraiser on this list, even that that game can stand up to nothing as an example of excellence. Also, I probably didn't play that many SNES games. I played way more NES and Saturn games.

Pretty shit list I have actually. My dad found one when I was kid in the later 90s that had a couple titles that are worth some good money now. I can stand most games via emulator though. If an SDloader with good combatibility ever surfaces I'll probably start marathoning classics I missed like when I got my ED64.

I wish Nintendo didn't just ditch 2D games with the 64. 2D games on the PS1 are beautiful.

Super Star isn't a great platformer and it certainly isn't the best Kirby game, and Phantasia is a /vr/-exclusive meme because some guy shilled the game off it's story hard enough during the months following /vr/'s inception. The gameplay is comparatively worse than Earthbound's. I couldn't even be bothered to put more than 10 hours in it, and I'm used to all sorts of generic JRPGs. The reason you guys hate Earthbound is probably due to the same shilling but I can't be sure

The battle system in Phantasia is different, but to what end? It's the same boring system, just with the characters running across the screen. And the whole tactics/form gimmick.

The story in Earthbound is nuts and ridiculous, but it's not incoherent. It fits with the universe it was set in.

The story can be boiled down to just collect these 7 things and save the world. The character interactions were shit and the story as a whole did not make much sense. It's about what happens other than that, especially for Earthbound. Earthbound's strength isn't the combat system or the general overview of the plot, it's in the small stuff (something different from virtually all other JRPGs). The encounters, the creatures, the atmosphere (light-hearted and "comfy"), the jokes, etc etc. It breaks the formula of the other JRPGs in those respects and it does it well, and it deserves merit for that. Not to mention the music.

I don't know anything about the fanbase other than that they're dedicated. I don't know any eceleb shills. I just completed a playthrough a couple months ago so it's hardly unbearable. The enemy design isn't any worse than most other JRPGs I've played where you find yourself in fights that often. The "nonsensical" dialogue is hardly nonsensical, and used for comedic effect. I'm sorry you lack a sense of humor to the point that you can't enjoy the game.

What about Rondo was hard to you?

Stages A and B (the last 2) of IV seemed harder than anything on Rondo to me.
Same about Stages 8 and 9.

Don't get me wrong, IV isn't hard either, but Rondo was the easiest of the classic titles for me.
The 3 big 16-bit Castlevania games are rather easy compared to the NES ones. Dracula X (snes) and Akumajou Dracula (Sharp X68000) were up to NES standards in terms of difficulty though.
