I currently use composite which I'm lead to believe is one of the worst for picture quality.

I have a CRT which only supports composite and my HD 1080p TV has HDMI,Component,Composite.

What is the best method for best audio and picture quality?

Composites fine. I'd much rather use dolphin than an LCD TV for gamecube, it looks beyond terrible and input lags a storm

I would prefer to have the best picture quality available to me as if I'm paying upwards of $50+ a game I should probably invest in a proper set up, but I'm confused on what is the best way to do so as there are restrictions to component and what not.

The best picture quality will come from the emulator dolphin. On original hardware a CRT with S Video is your best bet. I'd steer clear of HDTVs, you can give it a try if you wanna but things look pretty clearly upscaled (and not particularly good) and there aren't scanlines to mask it

Not retro but I'll help you out

Best case: Component cables + swiss-gc homebrew to force PAL games into progressive scan mode. Despite what people here are saying, you won't get serious input lag on an LCD IF and only IF if you are running in progressive scan mode.

Second best: RGB SCART cables, but be warned, I remember reading back in the day that Nintendo would ship units with faulty RGB outputs to Australia since it was never officially supported there. You may or may not be lucky.

Otherwise you're in composite hell. PAL Gamecube do not support s-video.

Hmm I guess I'll just stick with composite then as TV's that have SCART seem to be pretty rare in Australia, at least my location.
