Just got a used copy of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets for the GBC and I was worried about the battery inside.

If is it still going to be able to save in 5 years any help?

You can easily replace them. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think gbc carts use a normal watch battery.

My original GB games are just now at the age where their batteries are starting to go out (I've had to replace it for Link's Awakening and Donkey Kong.) GBC games are younger than that so yes, I would expect you have 5 years of life left at the very least, if not 10.

And even if they do die, they are easy to replace. Just invest in a security bit, a razor blade, and some electrical tape, and you too can replace any battery.

Best i'm aware Pokemon Gold & Silver are 99% dead batteries now if not replaced. yet Red & Blue batteries carry on forever.

They all do. When first opening it is just a bit hindering that the batteries are originally soldered to their point.

just shaving the old battery off and taping the new one on is a recipe to losing your saves yet again. you're better of buying a bunch of tabbed batteries (pretty cheap on eBay) and properly desoldering the old ones (at the tabs, never heat a battery more than neccesary) and soldering in new ones.

The only way is temporarely bridging to an external source. Connect two wires to an external battery and connect them to the two terminal points of the board. Then you can remove the old one.

5 years from now it probably won't save. Before starting your game I'd invest in a cr2025 battery and a proper screwdriver to replace it, it's not hard and will make it last another 15 or so years.
