Which RPGs (Western or Japanese) do you remember having unusual stories? Ones that didn't conform to the standard plots like that have become tired.

I'm not talking necessarily Placescape's level of difference and choice, but I'd like to play something retro with a bit of a twist to the plot(s) in the game.
