Watch a video of the collapse of Tower 1. You see all those huge, 5 to 10 story sections of sheathing ejecting out in the dust cloud as they hit lower floors and pivoting out? Notice the massive amounts of pulverized cement being blasted out at high speed? If you look up static photos of tower 1 collapsing, you'll see the entire upper portion skewing wildly to the side as a single corner triggered the collapse. It skewed across the street and carved nearly 16 stories of the lower corner of tower 7. There are photos of this damage, and of the fires burning at nearly every floor inside.
Tower 7 was the only other structure that collapsed that day, but 5 other buildings ended up being demolished due to damage. Tower 7 was the closest to the towers of any of those buildings and suffered far more damage than they did.
Pic related, it's the beginning of the collapse. Notice how the entire top of the building is starting to bow in? Not exactly what a controlled demolition would look like, and not very straight down at all.
