Titans are worth few thousand dollars and are the result of tons of players in different corporations pooling resources, so tossing one into battle escalated things. The enemy alliances scrambled their own capital ships and the guys who accidentally tossed a Titan in adapted, setting the new goal of hitting enemy capitals. Everything on standby was thrown into the mix.
The location where the battle happened was a little strange as well. It was in low security space rather than no security space, where most of the huge battles happen. Titans can't use their super weapons there, so it's not even worth bringing them. It's also much closer to the places most densely populated with players and as one of the Alliances involved was primarily composed of somethingawful shitters, much hated by everyone, calls were made and tons of groups showed up to the fight.
