Hey /wsg/

Wondering what video editing software you guys use? I downloaded NCH VideoPad today, and it's handy because you can directly edit and save webm files, but I have no experience with other editing software. I'm curious what the "best" is.

So, what software do you guys use to edit your videos?

OP here. I'm also not about to pay $120 for their software, and the most recent torrent I can find is for a version that doesn't support webm.

So definitely looking for something else.

For light editing VirtualDub
For Webm editing either Webm for Retards or FFmpeg

if you can stomach it - do everything with FFmpeg on command line. literally evey other free piece of software has FFmpeg under the hood anyway. there's a screenshot of an FFmpeg tutorial over at >>772587

if you don't like command line and you just want to do basic stuff (cutting, cropping, etc) i'd recommend Avidemux. free, open source, light-weight, very intuitive handling. doesn't do well with webms last time i checked even though it is little more than a GUI for FFmpeg, so you'd need to edit in x264 and then encode into VP8.

if you want heavy duty editing and the software should be free and legal there's no real way around Blender. yeah, it's primarily a 3d modelling software, but it has a full-fledged non-linear video editor built in. but don't even attempt to learn that shit on your own though, go directly to YouTube tutorials if you want to get anywhere. Blender is free, cool and open source, but a total bitch to learn.

what is your reason to prefer VirtualDub over Avidemux? i used VD for the longest time before switching to Avidemux two years ago. it's so much better imo! did they improve VD in the meantime?

Awesome, thanks guys. I know the topic isn't strictly webm related but I figured /wsg/ would have a good number of people who make their own. And yeah, anything I've done outside of VideoPad has been conversion using FFmpeg.

Hitfilm Express 3 is free and has a pretty good interface. Much more usable than Blender.

I really don't edit videos in a way that requires "professional" video editing software. I use avconv (autist's fork of ffmpeg) for transcoding existing vids to webm or cutting/concatenating vids.

Glad this thread exists because I've wanted to ask this for a while.

What's the best way to get video from a DVD? Either films or TV shows with multiple episodes per DVD. Is there any way to just put the DVD in and have it rip an .avi of the movie / each episode or is it more annoying than that.
