Howdy.

Single father here. For about two months, one of my teenage daughters has been drawn to witchcraft. I've talked to her about it many times, but she can't seem to tell me why she's interested in it. I don't think it's because of Harry Potter because she was never interested.

Is this something I should worry about? Why are young women throughout history drawn to this?

One reason, because it has roots in female things. These are quite different to most experiences in our society, which without getting into a flame war (I am a guy) is very male oriented. A lot of this male orientation isn't obvious until you look into stuff like wicca (witchcraft) and goddess worship.

Don't worry about her. Worst thing that can happen is that she will get fat and move to Glastonbury.

We will need to know a few more specifics before we can know if it's dangerous. If you're looking for a reason as to "why" she's suddenly in to this, you should just know that young people tend to be very impressionable at that age, and it may be a phase that she grows out of.

I also understand your worry, because it's sometimes worrisome that your kid makes such a drastic change out of nowhere. I'm UU, so with my kids, I let them believe or pursue whatever they want. But I make sure that they have a firm understanding of their beliefs, and have them explain what they believe. Sometimes, saying things out loud can let us know how strange they sound.

Trough Jesus everything could happen and you don't need to meditate, to do any magical technique, to seek any oriental teaching or philosophy, the teachings left by apostles are enough and if you want more there are the teachings of holy parents from the holy mountain of athos, there is some good literature in russia, romania and mostly orthodox countries...
Stay yourself away from everything occult - it's demonic influence... people here trash out simple concept of God and accept magic, demons, summoning rituals and all types of non-sense with inhuman ease.

It's natural for adolescents of any gender to be drawn to the paranormal or occult.

Now I'm not sure what I believe, because I started reading hermetic stuff out of curiosity and had an experience that overturned my whole paradigm. I'm sure I'll work it out at some point.

The point is that people's beliefs shift over their lifetime, ESPECIALLY when they're young, so don't worry about it.

I'd say it breaks down to about 20% trolling / 40% loonies / 40% normal (for 4chan). That's number of posts, not number of posters (keeping in mind the 10% rule). Almost all of the stuff we call magick is doing rituals and actions with a defined intent. You call upon gods, spirits, and manipulate universal forces to do this. In spiritual terms, this would be thought of as a branch of "religion" and not magick.

I don't think 4chan can entirely answer your question, seeing as they don't know all of the circumstances involved around your daughter's interest.

It is common for people become interested in "spirituality" or "the paranormal", especially in adolescence when they begin to start trying to figure out who they are and what's their place in the world. Modern witchcraft and magick give people an opportunity to explore those aspects of themselves and the world around them in a hands-on fashion.

It might alleviate your anxiety to get some books on witchcraft and read them.
