Just got back from a road trip to Oyotunji, a West African religious compound in South Carolina. They've been around since 1970 after their leader returned from Cuba.
They seemed pretty cool, at least they weren't Nation of Islam crazy. They were welcoming, eager to teach me about their king and beliefs.
It got kind of creepy though when the Oba drove by in his jeep and everyone got on one knee and touched the ground, and I sort of froze and just nodded at him. But they're serious about their religion, many of them had initiation scars and some wore masks.
There were weird political overtones, too
