How does /x/ feel about the Sumerian tablets and the Sumerian culture in general?

How could they have possibly know the correct proportions and locations of planets in our solar system? How did they know that the earth revolves around the sun?

Pluto wasn't even known until the late 1800s m8

For instance, according to Sitchin, they considered Pluto special, like people in Sitchin's present day did. But currently we don't. Pluto's one of what, like, twelve similarly sized objects in that region and about a thousand other general small rocks out there.

For instance, to us, in the modern day, a mere few decades after Sitchin, Pluto and Eris aren't significantly different from one another. As orbital solar objects, they're both of equal relevance. So why did Sitchin's Sumerians somehow only favor the knowledge Sitchin had available, but not the knowledge they'd have if they actually knew what they knew?

The answer's quite obvious, Sitchin's full of shit.

Wouldn't you have loved to have been one of the first civilizations to get your shit together and start building those. That tablet is a bunch of symbols that neither you or I read or understand. We are at the mercy of better trained scholars than ourselves as to what they do or don't say. The greatest weight and the most diversity all say Sitchin is full of shit, and given how lopsidedly his claims favor his own limited knowledge and agenda while at the same time requiring the rejection of most other science, we can deduce that they're probably right about him.

I do know there are real Sumerian tablets, but again, that's not salient to the point.

Don't get me wrong friend, I love living in a world of mass transportation, instant global communication, vaccinations, 80 proof alcohol and the goddamned cheese sandwich, but in my youth I grew up in rougher climes. I went for a year without electricity, where a good amount of what you were served at the table came from the garden, the wildlife or your neighbors, heat came from fire in your house and water was hauled from a creek and there was a simplicity to it.

I remember once hiking in the Sierra Nevada's and there's an artifact there, a heritage site, where some army scout who's name I forget wandered in and lived, in isolation, there for something like seven years. He build a very, VERY modest home, barely more than a shelter, in the hollow of a fallen redwood which is what's still there today, his little wooden bench bed, a tiny desk, etc.

I could see the appeal. i mean, I'd probably pull an into the wild if i actually took at shot at it, but if it worked out, if you managed to get everything running smoothly, it could be quite relaxing.

Surely you mean "keeping financial records", because if i remember my middle school history right, that's what the people who weren't salves did most of the time. The absolute mass of their surviving records are accounting books.

As for their culture in general, from what I do know about it I find the length yet instability of cultures like Sumeria or Egypt most interesting. Trying to track their religious beliefs is especially demanding because every two to three generations, tops, the power of one city state would wain and another would pop up and, ever so briefly, stomp everyone. And then I swear it was the task of half the fucking populace to replace all the religious statues.

It went back and forth depending, according to what I've read, on how the culture was doing at the time. Like, in this one book I have it's suggested that we have a lot of records during times of growing prosperity and change because that's when record keeping was important and a lot of people were being trained as scribes and scriveners. But at either the bottom of a period or the top there often weren't as many records because either a: no time or money, (bad times), b: all the records were being purged or hidden for being offensive or self incriminating (really bad times) c: every stopped giving a shit, so fewer records were kept or kept track of (good times, but decadent on the way to bad times.)

And then, of course, there's just fickle nature gambling with what'll be preserved and what won't.

I think that's true, and if I had to guess, I'd say that in part that might have been due to literacy being such a specialized skill.

Think about lawyers in the modern USA. Because of the depth and complexity of the legal system, both in the density and labyrinthine nature of the law itself and the ins and outs of court procedure, etiquette, etc. earning the right to act as a lawyer is considered a big deal. It is definitely an elitist culture. I bet either a: being able to read, write, work with figures, book keep, etc. or b: being able to afford that service, was similar, something you showed off. If you were out at a bar that evening with your scribe buddies you didn't hide that fact, it was something to brag about.

Believe it or not, but many ancient civilizations knew that the earth revolved around the sun. Ancient Vedic texts suggested this. They understood it by understanding the concept of gravity (which was discovered in Ancient India long before Isaac Newton).

The words gravity and gravitational pull are generally translated into Indian
languages as “GURUTVA AKARSHANA SHAKTI”. The word ‘Gurutva’ means ‘mass’
and ‘Aakarshana’ means ‘attractive pull’. The very name indicates that the ancient
Indians observed some relation between the mass of a body and the gravitational pull.

The Taittiriya branch of Krishna Yajurveda says –

This means, the sun is holding the earth and the heaven in the space. The sun has
the power of attraction (kristheeh) and shines without interruption.
The word “Kristhee” in the above sentence is derived from the root “krish” which
has no other meaning, but attraction. Saying that the sun is holding the earth in the space
through his power of attraction, implies that the earth also is a body with a different type
of force of attraction. Otherwise, if the sun is like a magnetic ball and the earth is like an
iron ball, they would have collided with each other long back. The same idea is reflected
very clearly in the following famous Sloka of Varahamihira (6th century AD)

….

The ball of the earth which is made up of the five fundamental elements, is placed
in the center of a cage, which is made up of the stars of the galaxy and hence it is hanging
in the sky, like an iron ball in the center of a cage of magnetic balls.

The word “Panchabhoota Maya” in the above Sloka is important.

No. Sitchin didn't know how to translate it. He didn't know Sumerian. No one outside of a few academics did when he was still around. The first Sumerian dictionary was published about 40 years after Sitchin was writing his bullshit books that no one fact-checked. All of his writings are based on made-up translations.
