The Warrens are kind of sensationalistic characters, but they've been around the block, I understand some are even more skeptical that they were involved in the investigation but that doesn't sway me one way or the other.
If it was a hoax for media or publicity, it still made for an entertaining story and some really good horror material.
If it wasn't a hoax, it was one of the most powerful cases of demonic infestation in a household in modern history.

Or, maybe some tribes knew of "power spots" like that and deliberately buried their dead there, hoping it would make the transition to the other side easier for a departed soul.
