we have threads about true crime, serial killers, missing persons and so on all the time
but what do you guys think about the FBI's NCAVC unit? Do you think its all a bunch if dumb luck, with some general psychological "profiles" that are actually useful? Why dont they just teach it to every homicide and sex crimes detective? When the last time the FBI even did something like this?

FBI has the advantage of being able to cross state lines. If a murder happens in one state and then the killer moves on, its more difficult for local police to do something about it

I think you can go to Quantico and get some training and advice on your own. I had a professor that used to be a missing persons detective said he went down there a few times

Dumb luck doesn't account for how often FBI profiles get things wrong. I looked this up a while ago, but it's actually kind of shocking how many times FBI profiles are just wrong about stuff. Look at the Unabomber, for example.

It's probably because most of their reasoning is based on statistics and low-level (and possibly outdated) psychology, along with guesswork. Criticism of "Criminal Minds" points this stuff out occasionally. And strangely enough, Silence of the Lambs kind of does, too. The book is about someone trying to get into profiling, but profiling doesn't help at all. It was basically dumb luck and talking to someone who knew the killer that caught Buffalo Bill, not a profile. Their stuff was all wrong and irrelevant.

Humans will never be completely predictable unless they dumb everyone down to an IQ of 70 or lower, which they just might be trying to do. And psychopathy is normalized in modern culture, so i assume the FBI has either added most of the population to the list of potential murderers or is completely oblivious to them.

Not to suggest the FBI is doing that. I use 'they' as an unknown. But it might make the FBIs work easier.

that's all for the convenience of story telling (im looking at you criminal minds). All theyre doing is taking a broad list of possible kinds of suspects and narrowing it down, the rest if old fashioned detective work

Definitely outdated. Modern psychologists rarely identify psychopaths before they commit a crime.

that's not true. i've read articles about children suspected of being psychopaths and it seems like they are finding better ways to identify the personality disorders and lack of empathy involved in psychopathy at a young age. children with behavioral problems are often referred for psychological testing long before they end up in a criminal life. and not all psychopaths resort to criminal behavior, although many do early in life before they understand the consequences of their actions. there are ways to manipulate your way through life without really breaking any serious laws and i would guess that most psychopaths move on to this type of lifestyle if they're trying to blend in with everyone else.

They still have to look for the big things like torturing animals or people. The more subtle things are missed and that's because selfish and even sadistic behavior is so common now. Most psychologists probably consider it normal. In a culture with high moral standards they would stand out more.
