In talking about atheism generally what we mean today is Agnostic Atheism. The notion that while there may not ever be any way to know for sure, that because there is no affirmative evidence for any particular gods or supernatural entities they almost certainly do not exist.

Though you need to be somewhat careful in that definition of atheism. Many Atheists would have no problem in the notion that this universe was created by some intelligent agent, its just that agent wouldn't be a supernatural deity.

As for reading old books, I personally enjoy scholarly textual criticism. I find the various hypothesis about sources, influences, authors, and the motives behind the writing of religious texts to be endlessly fascinating.

I would agree. As an agnostic theist, I can accept the possibility of the infinite universe even if I can't process the idea of something that has no beginning. My finite nature wants a beginning and an end.

I choose to believe in something beyond me that I lack the ability/information to understand. But I know I won't know until I'm dead. And even then maybe I won't. It's something I can't prove to anyone else or myself.

I get what you mean, though you have to be careful in your use of 'universe' because our own universe definitely does have a beginning in the big bang as well as several potential deaths. Its just that our universe appears to exist within a multiverse of many universes.

There is an interesting question, if supernatural entities exist within our universe, but those entities did not create the universe or the multiverse do they satisfy the theistic position's definition of gods?

Tracking backwards, the universe could be a negative asymptote. It would infinitely approach 0, but never reach it

In my view, that's something I can puzzle over until I'm dead. But I could never hope to find any evidence here on this planet to confirm or deny it.

If someone worships the Sun, then that's where their questions stop. They would seem to be more or less satisfied that all things came from the Sun. They would seek no further. So maybe that would satisfy a definition. Even it was only the Sun worshiper's definition of the infinite.

Granted, any idea of 'before the expansion' of our universe does tend to fall apart as that was also the beginning of time. I suppose I would consider any universe that might have spawned the singularity at the start of our own as being a different parent universe, but it could just as easily be viewed as the same universe.

From my experience, people tend to personify god in order to identify with their definition. Ultimately what I feel people are really trying to define or explain is consciousness along with its origin and purpose. I think a multiverse is possible, but it doesn't necessarily make an omnipotent God anymore inevitable than a single universe does. We don't even know where our own universe ends, if it ends at all.

Doesn't seem that way to me. Its entirely possible that rather than infinite universes where anything is possible we have universes with physical laws that have spawned from other universes with similar physical laws.

Even then, why posit only a single omnipotent deity? What is there to stop there from being two, or twenty? Or an infinite number?

In retrospect the changes of any specific thing happening may be extremely low. What were the odds that Joe Blow would win the lottery? Astronomical! What were the odds that the lottery would be won in any week though? Actually quite good.

There are billions of stars, some amount of those stars were going to have planets in the proper orbit to have liquid water, and of those planets some percentage of them were going to give rise to life or intelligent life. You looking up at the stars and asking why you exist may be extremely unlikely, but the odds that somebody would look up at the stars and wonder that is pretty good.

We'll really be better equipped to answer some of these questions if we discover life elsewhere in our own solar system.

It's self defining. The prefix A- means not, a lack of in this case. Theism is the belief in a divine creator. So, atheism is just the lack of a theistic belief. That's literally all it means. Atheism is not a religion. Why do you think it is?
Here are the three definitions of religion: the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods, a particular system of faith and worship or a pursuit or interest followed with great devotion.
An atheism clearly doesn't correspond with any of these. No. Atheists are all just individuals who do not believe in God and they all have their own individual beliefs and lifestyles that have nothing to do with their atheism.

That's more evidence than there is for a supernatural explanation. The thing about science, though, is that it is open to change theories and hypothesis based on new evidence. Even if they are wrong about how the universe began, new theories will adapt to account for new evidence if it doesn't fit current understandings, where as religiousfags will continue to say that god did it regardless of evidence.

Why would I need to explain how God was created when most Philosophers of religion/Theologians don't believe that God "operates" within space/ time meaning that he doesn't have to have a beginning.

Nice strawman, faggot. I'm actually a deist who DOES believe a god initiated the big bang. But I'm not going to insist that I KNOW it for sure, because there is no evidence of that fact. Try again, window licker.

I will however say that I know the holy books (any one of the abrahamic religions) are full of shit. I can say that because evidence doesn't support it. I can also say for sure that you are a complete retard for being unable to grasp a simple concept as the burden of proof. I'll try once again though.

If you make a claim, you must support that claim with evidence.
