The whole community hated them, the house they rented was typically just rented by a wealthy family or couple not a whole fucking church. No one really understood what they fuck they were, they just thought they were some weird church, my parents thought they were Jehovah witnesses. People would try to talk them to understand what they were, and more importantly when the fuck they would leave, they would never explain it. Ranch Santa Fe is a really nice neighborhood with a lot of families and retired couples and they were extremely out of place. My friend's mom filed a complaint because they were in violation of some housing regulation/ fire hazard law, it didn't go anywhere before they offed themselves.
A little after they killed themselves, the community all pitched in to demolish the house. I remember in the beginning of elementary school, the older kids would tell us about the suicide and take us the plot of land the house was on. I thought they were just trying to fuck with us. I always thought the thing was just a local urban legend until I got to high school and heard my mom talking about it with my dad. We had moved out of Rancho Santa Fe when I was in the 4th grade.
From the personal accounts I've heard and what I do remember as a kid, Heaven's gate was a fucking nut-house. What's funny is no one who remembers them prior to the suicide was surprised when they killed themselves. More like it just confirmed their suspicions, the only thing the community was really pissed about was how much it drove their home's value into the dirt.
