I believe that the majority of "paranormal" sightings and such are just the human mind trying to understand a reality beyond our own. We are conditioned from birth to behave and act within the four proven dimensions of space-time. I believe that there is a "higher" reality, existing beyond the consciousness of the human mind.

This presence manifests as different forms to different people, depending on their conditioning, state of mind, time period, etc.
