I don't think it's a matter of boredom, in the sense that they've just got nothing better to do than to just fuck with people by moving shit, making noises, possession etc. At the same time I feel there isn't an ultimate agenda they're trying to carry out.

Most of the spirits you encounter are lesser, subhuman souls that can't get over the attachment they felt while living on earth. "ghosts" arnt human thats so silly all of the "stuff" that makes us who we are is stored in the brain and that shit rots fast. if you look at 99% of ghosts shit in the real world its mostly unmeaning full noises and lights designed to cause the human anxiety and fear. if i were to guess id say around the time humans started to develop larger brains with a focus on communication the now much more complex electrical system began interacting with earths natural magnetic field. This created a electromagnetic self replicating system whose continued existence depended on the stimulation of certain electrical impulses in the brain. The easiest way was to do that was to raise the ambient emf to something humans find uncomfortable. as natural selection progressed the organisms found new ways to cause the desired effect. the ghosts we have now are simply a much more complex version of that system that uses the environment,light, and sound to create a"scary situation" each individual systems adopts different traits over long periods of time. demons are a sub species that focuses on one person. this could be related to many humans in Africa and america to be isolated while the western ghost fed on many people thus had a distinct hunting ground.
