So, apparently the woman and her baby weren't in on it. The directors didn't plant her and neither them nor the actors had met her before. They randomly walked up to her and she just started blabbing about the witch myths and stuff.

Did she just play along and lie through her teeth in the hopes of getting in the "documentary" or is there really something mysterious going on in the Maryland woods?

All of the other interviewees were allegedly planted by the directors and briefed on the mythos beforehand.

TBWP did a lot of things well, they put out missing persons posters for the stars, didn't they? I can't remember. It was a pretty good movie, probably the first "found footage" style I ever saw.

Do you have a source for your claims, OP?

Only a few of the interviewees were plants. The interview portion got edited down to the most interesting characters, most of whom happened to be the plants, but Heather really picked people completely at random out of Burkitsville.

I was in my late teens when BWP came out.

They put out missing persons posters in college towns where they were hoping to get screenings for the limited release. The first I heard of it was a blurb in Rolling Stone the spring of 1999, and really about all it said was "scary as hell." The idea of a mockumentary that wasn't a comedy like Spinal Tap was kind of foreign to everybody back then. About the only other found footage horror anybody could've possibly heard of before that was Cannibal Holocaust, which was pretty obscure.

It was a time where only pretty savvy individuals even thought to look things up on snopes. If it was in a periodical or on TV without a disclaimer, most people under 30 just believed it. You had to do some digging to find out it was fake at the time. If it was shot on camcorder and not over-acted, it was generally considered real.

They also had a pretty impressive website for the time, and the sci-fi channel documentary that didn't let viewers in on the gag, and was pretty believable at the time. All that improv acting was something mainstream audiences had never seen before. The depth they put into the story through all the promotional materials was extremely impressive. The movie itself was just kind of the icing on the cake by the end of it. Didn't hurt that those kids were genuinely cold and hungry and scared through most of it.

Yeah they even made the stars go on a media blackout for a couple of months when the movie came out. Out of all the found footage movies ever made this is the only one that even attempted to seem like the real deal using it's marketing.

Yeah I was 7 in 1999, and I didn't see it until I was probably 11-12 or so. It was pretty scary, but I was too young to notice any of the buildup.

I think it could be done. First, you'd need to pick out some no-name actors willing to participate in it. Then set them up with fake social media accounts you made even longer ago than that. Build up a community for a while, they give out hints they're up to some sort of documentary or maybe all going on a trip. Then have them just go offline. No calls, no GPS, no nothing. Hide them for a few months and wait for the media to pick up on it. You could release little clues or communicate with the press and kinda guide the hand. Then release the movie.

But yeah, that's a lot of buildup for a movie that might bomb. The main thing is avoiding social media. It'd work best if they were all from some hellhole in Eastern Europe or something.

Teenagers maybe, but nobody I knew in their 20s believed it. Actually the only person I knew who believed it was one teenage wiccan I knew from IRC. The following generations have gotten more gullible about mass media, not less.

Yeah I totally forgot about Alien Autopsy for a second. Still it wasn't a common thing like it is now. Alien Autopsy was a deliberate hoax though, not just using it as a marketing ploy that would eventually be revealed.

Quite a few I knew in their 20s believed it. I don't believe for a second your claim that following generations are more gullible about mass media. You find a single youtube video with more than a hundred comments that doesn't have one saying "fake and gay."

I'd venture a guess that in 1999, the effort they put into it was probably cheaper than a trailer at the time. The budget Haxan had put into it before they picked up a distributor could've probably been made back in a release covering two or three cities. They were taking a very calculated, but not necessarily huge risk, and the marketing strategy came about due to their budgetary constraints. It was kind of a perfect storm all around.

Thing is she wasn't. She's just a local of where they were filming. She wandered by, so they approached her. It wasn't planned. The directors have directly stated that they planted people around where they were, but she wasn't one of them.
