Hey /x/

So my dads an artist and believes that his improved ability to see patterns in nature has resulted in him witnessing the prevalence of sixes and hexagons in nature. He swears that it's literally the foundation of everything. Is there any truth to this, or is he losing his mind/obsessing over random numbers and geometric shapes?

This makes a lot of sense I think. Typically, the mark of an artist is to recognize shapes and patterns as they are vs seeing the object that they comprise. People who can't draw/paint/whatever, try to recreate the object as they see (that is to say as a whole) instead of seeing and "tracing" the lines, curves, colors, and so on that are, in a very real sense, the true object. The number 6 is just the shape that, for whatever reason, stuck out to him. Not that surprising consider the swirling shape of the number itself -- Fibonacci Sequence anyone? -- is seen very commonly in nature.

On an interesting side note, the number 6 in numerology, seems to have strong ties to the idea of "Mother Nature". I'm not much into numerology but take it as you will. I'd say at worst your dad is eccentric OP. Pretty cool art btw too

That is pretty interesting. I'd agree that it's his job to re-represent nature, I just worry that he's fucking nuts. His primary interest is in hexagons. I've just never really heard anything about it from anybody else but him.

I really do like his work.
Reminds of like Nightmare Before Christmas type creatures. Just Tim Burton things in general. Surreal yet clearly depicted.

Also unrelated but your father looks like a true man who's done real things. I hope I look like him when I'm older.

Try to do this with 7 or 8 edges. Try to do it with less than 5 and you'll have inefficient energy conservation.

There is nothing metaphysical about it though. Just the same way planets are always spherical.

I think he's said something like this before. I just can't ever tell if it has any truth because he has no formal education in anything that might be able to allow him scientifically describe it

I think he also leans more into the pseudo-metaphysical camp of "sacred geometry" in his descriptions. I'm much more inclined to argue that it's something that can be explained naturalistically.

Ha. Hivemind. Sacred geometry isn't pseudo-metaphysical in the sense that it is ordinary geometry noticed recurring in various forms in nature, and reproduced in art and architecture.

It does become associated with metaphysics because natural forms at one time were viewed as expressions of god or the gods. The Golden Ratio for example, or the transit of Venus which if drawn out geometrically gives a 'five petalled flower'.

I'm not an expert on this stuff but your dad would get a lot out of studying it.
